How to Calculate Dates to Set Eggs
How to Calculate Dates to Set Eggs
- Chicks take about 21 days to hatch.
- Those born under a waxing Moon, in the fruitful signs of Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces, are healthier and mature faster.
- To ensure that chicks are born during these times, determine the best days to "set eggs" (to place eggs in an incubator or under a hen.)
- To calculate the best days to set eggs, find the three fruitful birth signs. Find in your Almanac or purchase your own Moon's Sign Calendar here.
- Using only the fruitful dates between the new and full Moons, count back 21 days to find the best days to set eggs. See Moon phases for your area.
- Example: the Moon is new on June 12 and full on June 26. Between these dates, on June 13 and 14, the Moon is in the sign of Cancer. To have chicks born on June 13, count back 21 days; set eggs on May 23.

I shipped out my first eggs and the buyer was nice enough to take pictures to show me how they arrived. WOW, I won't be so nervous the next time. No holes in box, no gooey yellow stuff on the inside of box or bubble wrap. All eggs arrived safe and sound. I have NEVER received a box with cracked/broken egg in it and I've had them shipped in from all over the U.S. I'm so glad that these arrived at their destination in the same shape.
When I ship eggs, I put a few shipping peanuts in the bottom of the box, I bubble wrap each egg and put scotch tape on each end to keep egg in there. I leave the ends open for air. I put one layer of eggs in box all laid the same way, I put another layer of eggs the opposite way then fill box with shipping peanuts. Close box, tape it good and off to the PO I go. I send them priority mail which usually reaches their destination the morning of the second day. Cost is usually between $10 and $15 depending on how many eggs I get in the box.
I've never had a box arrive with cracked or broken eggs when shipped this way.
I have to have them at my PO by 3 PM to go out as priority mail that day.
If I ship chicks, I take them to our bigger PO and they leave there at 2:20 PM and are at their destination the next day shipped Express mail usually costing $35 to $40 for day old chicks. If they are older (week or so) then they will cost around $65 Express mail.
