I just thought that this was information that anyone getting the Underwood line red's from me should know.
I bought eggs from Jim Heinz back in October 2012. I hatched these birds am very pleased with these. These eggs came from a combination of the RC and SC variety. I want to let everyone know that there is always a chance that you may get RC chicks from the SC variety and SC chicks from the RC variety. When I got my eggs, the RC and SC were mixed together. I do keep my birds separate but there is still the chance of getting either variety because the different variations have been mixed over the years. Gary crosses a few of his RC and SC together every 5 - 6 generations to get the new blood into his flock. He does not bring in any new blood through other families or lines. I got this information from Gary via email. It didn't come from anyone else. As I said, I keep mine separate and have had very small percentage of mixed comb style but I don't want anyone thinking I am doing anyone wrong if you happen to get the different variety when your chicks begin to grow. These are absolutely gorgeous birds with nice size, color and type. The ones that I have are also decent layers. With all this said, I think that anyone would be very well satisfied with this very old line of Rhode Island Reds. Thank you all for considering this line whether it be from me or another person working with this line. I also got SC chicks from Gary February 2013 that will be mixed in with my SC pen from Jim Heinz.
