I have been getting emails and phone calls wanting my old strain (Mohawk Line) of Rhode Island Red Large fowl that I started about twenty years ago from Mr. E. W. Reese Jr. of Thompson, Georgia. These where the Rhode Island Red Large Fowl that Mr. Reese got from Mrs. Donald Donaldson of Decatur Georgia in the early 1960s. Mrs. Donaldson started her strain in 1912 from eggs from Owen Farms of Mass. Then got a male from Maurice Wallace called Mohawk V a champion at the Ottawa, Canada winter show around 1927 for a large price of $150. From this male she started her Mohawk line. I discovered this trait in some six year old hens about 20 years ago and from these females pushed early maturity, high egg production and superior feather quality in the pullets which got me this old line to come to the surface. There are three breeders that got adult birds from me or chicks and they are listed below. To the best of my knowledge these Large Fowl reds are still 100% my old line with no out cross of any other breeder. Andre St. Romain showed a Single Comb Large Fowl Cockerel at the November2008 El Dorado, Arkansas show and he was Champion Large Fowl of the Show. I have been told by many good breeders and judges that this was the finest Rhode Island Red they ever saw. One judge picked my original Male #99 at my first show that I showed at about 18 years ago as Champion Large Fowl of the Show and he was at this show at Eldorado. So this judge remembers my old line but yet felt as others this was a great true to type large fowl Red Male Bird by young MR. Romain. Gregg Chamness from Illinois has a great female line and had some original females that where 8 and 9 years old that I shipped to him before I got out of the Large Reds that still where laying. Brian Simmons from Flordia got ten chicks from me ten years ago and kept this line looking very good. I have not contacted Brian in about three years, but it would be worth a try to locate him. I hope this helps you as these are the only three people that I know of who have this old 1912 Mrs. Donaldson line. I would love to get ten started chicks from Greg and Andre and then cross them together and start a passionate line breeding program for five to ten years. Just think if you could get some chicks out of this great Cockerel from Andre or from this great Cockerels parents what else could you ask for in large fowl reds. I hope this helps you in your search for this old historic line of large fowl Reds.
If you would like some help in breeding large fowl Reds for Color email me and I would be happy to share my secrets with you.
Yours for a better Rhode Island Red.
