This boy belongs to Matt Ulrich This is a brother to his big winner. Just goes to show that a good breeder can produce more then one winner. Matt is to humble to say this so I will.
Way to go Matt. The two pictures are the same bird. Pictures are not a good way to judge birds. lol
Just got this from Matt. As I said, he is to humble to blow his own horn but this makes me feel so proud of him for what he is doing with these birds. This was 2/15-16/2014 show
'jimmy, just thought you may like to know...I won Champ Large Fowl at the Newnan,
GA yesterday with your birds daddy. I have never shown him before but he had his
day today...."
Just a little something that I was very proud of. I am really tickled for Matt Ulrich to think that someone thought enough of the time and work that Matt has put into these birds to use one of his winning birds on the RIRCA pamphlet for 2014.
3/10/2014 These are my boys that I kept from chicks that I got from Matt. They are just a few weeks shy of 1 year. The two pictures above is the dad of my boys.
Bird on left is really heavy. he has a little shorter comb but really nice points. They do raise their tails so I think the set will be fine. The boy on the left is heavier then the one on the right and the one on the right has the longest keel. I really do like both of these boys. I have 4 girls so I may just put 2 hens with each of these boys then work from there. lol

I feel so honored to have gotten my birds from Matt. Especially knowing that the two families that he crossed to get some of these both came from the birds that Bob had. Hopefully I will be able to keep some of these reds around for a long time. I think of our dear friend Bob each time that I talk about or even look at these pictures of the "Mohawk" as Bob so proudly called them. I just call them My Matt's Reese Reds.
Added this 4/5/2014, I have to say that I was really bummed out with my first Reese birds that came from another fella. It took them forever to mature and never did lay well. These birds have more then tripled my expectations. I have gotten more eggs from these pullets then I ever expected. I love the looks of these birds, the male pictured above left is one of the most beautiful red cocks that I've seen but of course I am a little prejudice since he is mine. lol I don't really care who says that there is no Mohawk or the Reese are no more. I will always call these my Matt's Reese/Mohawk birds.

2/23/2014 This was posted by the judge of this weekend show: Just wanted to say congratulations to Matt Ulrich on a very nice win yesterday at the Central Florida Poultry Breeders Show in Inverness, FL. He had Best RI Red, Champion American, and Reserve Champion Large Fowl on a very nice cock bird. It was a pleasure to handle and judge such a nice bird...well done Matt. That bird truly deserved that win.

4/3/2013 Oh my goodness. I talked with Matt for over three hours on the phone last night and I can honestly say that he is one super person and knows his stuff when it comes to this line of reds. These chicks are the cross of the Illinois and Florida Reese Red's that from now on I will call Matt's birds. As far as I am concerned as much time and work that Matt has put into these and showing this line as he has and done as well as he has, he deserves the right to have them called his line.
Matt got the original old Reese lines from Brian Simmons (Florida) and Greg Chamness (Illinois) and crossed these two families.
I was ready to give up on this line but after talking to Matt I've decided to go on with them. If all goes as planned, I should have these 4/9 or 4/10.
Gosh, if things work out for me the way I'm thinking, I will probably be pretty busy this coming fall, winter and into spring of next year. I really did want to work with this line but after my experience with the first batch I really didn't want to. I am so glad that Matt and I got in touch with each other and am especially grateful for all the information that Matt had given me about this line.

4/10/2013 Just received my chicks. Oh what a hectic day. I was just ready to go out and start butchering some of my mixed roosters and the phone rang saying that my chicks were in. Sure did have to do some hurrying to get them in their tote, feed and water them and take off outside. My helper was coming in 20 minutes. Gee, I haven't even gotten to enjoy these yet. They are really nice though. Got 16 of these little critters. They sure did dive into their feed and water. lol I don't know just exactly how old they are, I will have to ask Matt when they were hatched. I'm guessing 5 - 7 days.
Will get some better pictures in a few days.
Will get some better pictures in a few days.
4/20/2013 I can't say how proud I feel to have gotten these chicks from Matt. I truly love the RIR's and to know that I have 3 of the oldest lines that have been kept pure for so many years only makes me feel more proud. I will do my best as long as I raise chickens to keep these lines up to what they are to be and I will keep pure lines with all three of the ones that I'll be working with.
5/28/2013 These will be 8 weeks old tomorrow. Really getting nice. Thanks Matt, I'm hoping for good things with these young ones.
7/15/2013 I can only guess at exactly how old these are but I got them 4/10 and I know they were a week or so old so I'm counting 4/1 as their hatch date. This will have them 15 weeks old today. These aren't the best pictures because it was late when I was taking them and I was a pretty good piece away. The last ones are a little better. Check out the feet color.
Quote from Bob about above birds. look at the leg color on the bottom picture. I saw this out of the corner of my eye when I saw the picture. This is the correct leg color. All this yellow leg color is for the lighter strains of reds in my view. When your large fowl Reds are ten months old you want the under color to be so dark it burns your fingers when you look at the color the old boys use to say. You want the quills to be black and the finish on the surface a shinny dark hue. In fact the ideal strain is a half a hour before sun down there is a vermillion hue to the color. You cant get this if you have pretty yellow legs showing up. This leg color is to be used wisely. In order to get a complete Rhode Island Red and one that will molt back at two and three years old to look even in color they got to be dark. Jimmy love the pictures and enjoy the experiment with all your strains of Reds you have. You are the only one I know of who has done this in 50 years or more.
8/6/2013 I think that I am finally feeling satisfied with this group of birds. I sit and watch them almost every day while they are out free ranging and look at each one so close. I'm finally seeing something different that I really like in a couple of the cockerels. The pullets seem to be a little on the small size but they are just 4 months on these pictures so I'm not expecting to see a whole lot of super birds yet. I found one of the cockerels today to be a very nice bird. He is quite a bit heavier then the others.
8/19/2013 20 week old birds. The girls are all pretty nice other then they seem a little on the small side. My Underwood birds spoiled me with their quick maturity. lol
8/29/2013 Just a few random shots. 21 1/2 weeks old These birds are getting nicer and nicer. I am so thankful that Matt thought enough of me to entrust me with this group. I'm surely going to try and get a nice little group of these to work with in the future.
10/18/2013 Below photo's are my Matt's birds at approx 6 1/2 months old. They are really getting nice.
The top row bird on far right is the bird that Bob Blosl was talking about in his last post made on BYC Forum. It was a very sad time for me but makes me feel good that the last post he made was a good one pertaining to one of my reds from the line that he had started.
Matt look this is the trait from my first three males I started with 25 years ago.
High Stepper. Standing on one leg. Like this male Jimmy.
Legs dead center plum, flat top line thick brick shape oblong, Cant wait to see him in two months. Bob
I copied/pasted the info below from a post that Bob made in reference to the bird he called High Stepper. If Bob started his reds from a bird like this, I will definitely keep this boy till he fully matures and see how he looks. I can't let Bob see him but I will surely judge him very harshly. Bob had posted this 10/31/2012
Saw some very nice Rhode Island Red large fowl last night. Matt has one male that looked like one of my original males I started with 30 years ago. I had a six year old hen and she produced three great males. One male I called War Eagle, the other High Stepper and the other Houdini as we could not keep him in a pen. The male has the length of body like High Stepper and the head of War Eagle. When people say the Mohawks are small this guy is not. He is the largest Male of my line I ever saw. He is as big as Radamakers Reds I saw 12 years ago and his are huge.
11/15/2013 These birds are just a little over 7 months old on these pictures. I really do like the looks of these guys/gals. This was a terrible day to take pictures, overcast, breezy and I just couldn't get the color right. Oh well, it shows the type etc. of them okay.
1/10/2014 These guys are so excited about getting out today. lol Some have the rainy day look but that is natural because there is a real fine mist coming down.
2/21/2014 Finally got a day where I could let these out to run a little. I am so pleased with these birds. I just can't wait until the weather warms up and the girls start putting out enough eggs so I can raise some of these up. I really like the body structure on the boy in picture 4, 5, and 7. The others are okay but I like that heavier body. He is a real corker. The pullets are a little on the small size but that is okay. I'll work on that a little later. I'm so happy to have these birds from Matt.
I lost 2 of my boys this week. Hopefully I will have 2 boys and 4 girls to go into the 2014 breeding season with these.
3/10/2013 These are the latest pictures of my Matt's Reese/Mohawk birds. I am hoping to raise just a few of these to get a few more to work with next year if I'm lucky. These are out of the boy that Matt won with at Neunan Show in Feb 14. I am so happy to have gotten these from Matt. I will try to keep these birds going if for no other reason, because they came from our ole buddy Bob Blosl. I wish he could see them now. He PM'd me many many times about these birds. The last boy in the second row is the same one as the middle bird in the center. I wanted to show the dark horn on the front of the legs. The top right is nice but just not as wide in the back nor as heavy. I don't think I will be using him. These girls have started laying a few couple of weeks or so ago. I will be hatching every egg that I can from them this year. I truly do love these birds and can't thank Matt enough for getting them to me. Thank you my dear friend.
